Nine conservative MSPs have backed Liz Truss as prime minister, arguing that Scotland would be “at the heart of the Union” under her leadership.

The foreign minister was described as a “sincere unionist” by Scottish conservative politicians Finlay Carson, Sharon Dowey, Murdo Fraser, Rachael Hamilton, Liam Kerr, Stephen Kerr, Douglas Lumsden, Oliver Mundell and Graham Simpson in a public comment.

The hope of the Tory leadership has previously insisted that it will not allow a second referendum on Scottish independence to be held if he becomes prime minister.

The handful of Scottish Tory politicians said: “Having spent her early years living in Scotland, Liz is a daughter of the Union.

“He knows from personal experience that we are stronger when we work together across the UK.”

The public announcement, which was published Monday in The Times newspaper, described Truss as “a sincere and passionate unionist”, adding that “with Liz as prime minister, the Union will not only be defended, but supported”.

MSPs said Ms. Truss is the only candidate in the Tory leadership contest who has “a bold and ambitious plan for the country and the economy based on conservative values.”

They said it will get the economy moving by cutting taxes, including scrapping the planned corporate tax hike, reviewing the unexpected energy company tax, and reversing the recent hike in national insurance.

As Scotland suffers from 15 years of neglect in the SNP, we need a prime minister who is ready from day one to tackle the challenges we face

They concluded: “Liz will not play Nicola Sturgeon’s constitutional games.

“As the SNP continues its attempts to distract Scottish voters from their shameful past in government with a referendum, Liz as Prime Minister will focus on providing the Scottish people with the issues they care about most.

“Liz won’t be distracted by the SNP’s obsession with independence; she will be laser focused to unite our country and make it happen as we have never seen it before.

“With Scotland suffering from 15 years of neglect in the SNP, we need a prime minister who is ready from day one to face the challenges we face; who will support Scotland’s strong and vibrant place in the heart of the Union; who will boost our economy so that Scotland comes out of the pandemic and headwinds of the global economy with all its citizens benefiting from it; and who will face international threats like Vladimir Putin ”.
